Ornaments Made out of Old Shirts

Do you have old clothes or fabric laying around and a Christmas tree with no ornaments on it?  You can make these ornaments out of old shirts! It's fun and you don't have to spend a fortune!

Materials and Tools:
  • old shirts
  • styrofoam balls
  • straight pins or hot glue
  • floral wire
  • scissors

Steps:

1. Find vintage shirt patterns (or any shirt that you like) that works with your holiday theme.
2. Cut all the seams off the shirt, including the collar, cuffs and yolk. Then, take off the buttons. This will        ensure you get as much fabric as you can.
3. Use different-sized Styrofoam balls and straight pins (hot glue).
4. Lay out a piece of the fabric. Roll one of the balls with the piece of fabric to find out how big the strips need to be to cover the Styrofoam. Cut the fabric this length so you have a big strip.

5. Fold the strip up lengthwise four times and cut different widths.
6. Take one end of the fabric and wrap it around the ball and pin it (or glue it). Continue this process until the entire ball is covered. A second set of hands is helpful.
7. Use floral wire to adhere the ball to garland, a wreath or a tree.

In case you need to visualize it more, here is a video of a similar way to craft fabric ornaments.

This is something fun that you can do with your kids and your family over the holiday break. Make them, your tree will thank you!
